You are a genius!

Odds are you don’t consider yourself one, but when you look up “genius” in the American Heritage Dictionary (where, believe it or not, it does not have a picture of Steve Jobs), it says this:

1a. Extraordinary intellectual and creative power. b. A person of extraordinary intellect and talent: “One is not born a genius, one becomes a genius” (Simone de Beauvoir).

There’s more, but that’s the gist of it. So why do we refer to genius as this rare thing, found once in a while in eminent physicists (and sometimes NFL coaches)? In truth, doesn’t every one of us have some “extraordinary creative power”?

Think about it… you definitely do. Maybe you have a knack for connecting with people and putting them at ease. It could be your ability to perceive opportunities where others see problems. Or your  keen eye for color and design. Or your capacity to combine common ingredients into a recipe that’s original and exceptional.

Admit it, you have a gift. It’s something you’re freakishly good at, you care  passionately about, and have probably taken for granted.

In fact, you’re are an expert at something that other people have to work at. They simply cannot do what you do naturally, and without much effort. When they look at you they see an extraordinarily creative person — a genius.

So the question is, what are you doing with your talent, your genius potential? Because here’s the thing — whether you are launching a business, struggling with the business you already have, or you just want your business to perform better, the way forward is to leverage your strengths and become the best in the world (your world) at what you do.

As Seth Godin writes in The Dip, there are serious advantages to having a reputation as the best — people will pay a premium for it. But… how do you become the best? Do you go to a seminar, get an MBA, read the Wall Street Journal? Seriously, there’s an expanding universe of how-to-succeed materials out there.

First of all, you follow your passion and your talent. The things you are not good at (and don’t enjoy), you can outsource, delegate and form partnerships around. The trick is to make the most of your time, every day, by focusing on what you do best — what you’re a genius at — and deliver so much value to your clients that they can’t imagine going without your product or service.

That’s what happens when you harness your extraordinary creative power!

Now, of course it all depends on where you are at with your business today, and where you really want to be. Just following your passion is not going to get you far if you don’t take the right actions, in the right order.

As I was assisting one my customers a couple weeks ago, she made a statement that absolutely shocked me. Afterwards I did a lot of thinking aout her comment. Now that I read this article on geniuses, I find that maybe she was right about me. As she watched me “do my magic” as she calls it, she announced that I was a genius. This comment rocked me in a way that I had never given thought to. Me? A genius? You’ve got to be joking? She was serious, but I wasnt! So to all who have read here, you too, should take a step back and really look at who you are or what it is about you THAT does make you a genius. Once I thought about my customers comment, I thought, no, I cant be a genius, but after reading the dictionary definition and giving myself a little credit (which the soul needs every now and again) I can see where she may think that I am a genius. So, if I take the credit that was given to me, then I should be able to grab it and run with it and make myself profitable too. Thanks for this site and all the great info provided. It has helped me “believe in myself”. So now if I APPLY the knowledge learned here, there should be no stopping me now. Again thanks for the great info.
