How to get publicity for your business

One of the biggest areas of neglect for small businesses is publicity. This doesn’t mean companies need to pull a huge stunt to get their name in the mix of a media frenzy. Rather, a simple news release to your local community or out on the Web is an easy and budget-friendly starting point.
The media is always hungry for news. All media outlets are looking for a story, not bulleted facts of what functions your business performs. Find a story in your business and feed that to the media, and they will feed you traffic. And you’ll want to make your material have something of value for everyone – you certainly don’t want your news release to simply plug your business.
The best way to find your local media outlets is through a media directory, which can usually be found through your Chamber of Commerce for pretty cheap. It lists every news contact in and around your area, every magazine, newspaper, radio, TV, syndicates and more. They tell you how to approach them, including phone numbers, e-mails and faxes. And two great media resources for gaining Web exposure are PRWebDirect.com and IMediaFacts.com. It’s important to realize that your media solutions can be as targeted and budget-friendly as you wish.
Whether it’s for a new product, blog on your site or a new employee, send out a news release for everything you do. By doing this, you increase your chances of someone finding something of interest in your company and likewise increase the exposure of your company.
